Database Administrator

A database administrator is a Computer Systems Engineer specialising in the day to day running of database applications. Databases are the core computing applications for many businesses and organisations.

Duties may include:

  • Design and build databases to store information for an organisation (in larger applications this will be done by database developers)
  • Ensure that database information is fully available and that the risk of the database failing is minimised
  • Monitor the performance of the database
  • Monitor the growth of the database, and plan its capacity
  • Fix any database problems such as software or hardware failures
  • Ensure the accuracy of the data
  • Manage the security of the data
  • Provide user support and documentation of procedures
  • Plan for recovery of databases after failures

In a smaller organisation, the roles of database administrator and database developer may be combined.
