A database administrator is a Computer Systems Engineer specialising in the
day to day running of database applications. Databases are the core computing applications for many
businesses and organisations.
Duties may include:
- Design and build databases to store information for an organisation (in
larger applications this will be done by database developers)
- Ensure that database information is fully available and that the risk of
the database failing is minimised
- Monitor the performance of the database
- Monitor the growth of the database, and plan its capacity
- Fix any database problems such as software or hardware
failures
- Ensure the accuracy of the data
- Manage the security of the data
- Provide user support and documentation of procedures
- Plan for recovery of databases after failures
In a smaller organisation, the roles of database administrator
and database developer may be combined.
