Database Developer

Database Developers, also known as Data Modellers, or Database Analysts, design and test database management systems that support institutional business applications and are accessed by multiple departments.

The role incorporates aspects of both software development and systems analysis

Duties and responsibilities may include:

  • Review, develop and design data models in conjunction with application development teams and systems analysts
  • Create logical data models and translate them into physical database structures that integrate with existing or proposed database structures
  • Monitor relational databases to optimize database performance and resource use
  • Address database integration issues including migration between disparate databases, integration, maintenance/conversion, capacity planning issues and new applications
  • Maintain "development", "test" and "production" RDBMS environments
  • Provide advice to software developers in the effective use of database languages; advising on troubleshooting, exception processing needs, and other data management issues
  • Evaluate and recommend testing and evaluation of new procedures, software, and hardware

In our software development course we focus on the design and implementation of databases rather than the support functions related to database work.
