The terminology used to explain vocations in web design and development is
often applied incorrectly.
A Web Designer by strict definition is basically a graphic artist involved
in the design of the visual interface of a web page and its contents at the client end.
Web Developers, also known as Web Programmers are involved in the
operation and maintenance of web sites at the server end. Their job is to create and maintain advanced
internet applications, such as pages which control visitor access, serve information extracted from a large
database, or execute electronic commerce transactions.
Most of this work is done in a range of programming languages or
environments, including Perl, Java, VBscript, and C#, or proprietary extensible markup languages (XML) such
as PHP, Mivascript and Cold Fusion.
Most software engineers start their training in the most common programming
languages such as Visual Basic .NET, C#, Delphi and C++ (php has a very similar syntax to C++) and then
develop expertise in other languages while in employment.
