A/V and Staging Technicians work in the entertainment, corporate events
and education sectors, operating, installing, maintaining and repairing electronic and electrical
equipment. This equipment includes video and computer data projectors, multi screen display systems,
audio mixing consoles, amplifiers and speaker systems and intelligent lighting systems.
Technicians may work for audio rental/production companies, corporate
staging companies, venue operators, or for institutions such as universities and polytechnics. Many are
self employed contractors and work may be seasonal or casual.
With the requirement for constant innovation in staged presentation,
technicians may sometimes be working with prototype systems for electromechanical special effects. While
the field of lighting is less electronics oriented, EST-A is a
highly recommended qualification.
Staging Technicians work in conjunction with Lighting Designers, Audio
Mixing Engineers, Stage Managers and crew both indoors and outdoors, often with very irregular hours and
under intense pressure of deadlines. Many staging technicians also have rigging skills required to work
safely at heights.
