Domestic and industrial electrical contractors and larger electrical
manufacturing companies employ Electrical Apprentices and Cadets. Employers most often seek young men and
women in the range 17-21 years of age, but many will employ older apprentices/cadets if they demonstrate
the talent and potential to meet their specific company requirements.
Candidates must have certain NQF Electrical Engineering unit standards to
meet the essential 'pre-trade' requirements. This vocation has a notation of approximately 8,000 working
hours (4 years) and technical qualifications to achieve along the way. The employer will take
responsibility for the on-job training of the apprentice/cadet, supplemented with extra mural education and
examinations at evening classes to achieve the status of Registered Electrician.
There is an increasing demand from employers for apprentices with pre-trade
qualifications in the principles of electronics, telecommunications and security installation. These are
the 'new age' apprentices who can provide their employers with a much wider scope of business activity and
ultimately expand their own career horizons.
