Qualification Overview

This is a 20-week, full time, open-entry programme that provides the essential foundation training in the field of computer engineering.

What is open-entry?

Open-entry means essentially anyone may enroll in this course. However, whilst the basics of computing are covered, an understanding of the Windows operating system and word processing skills are expected. It would also be advantageous for students to have access to a computer, and therefore the Internet, outside class hours.

About the course

The Certificate in Computer Systems Engineering (level 4) is based on the following internationally recognised CompTIA (Computing Technology Industry Association) and Microsoft qualifications:

  • CompTIA·A+ certification validates foundation-level knowledge and skills necessary for a career in PC support
  • CompTIA·Network+ certification is the sign of a qualified networking professional regarding network technologies, installation and configuration, media and topologies, management, and security
  • Microsoft Exam 98-366: Networking Fundamentals certification demonstrates and understanding of network infrastructure, network hardware, protocols and services.
  • Microsoft Exam 98-349: Windows Operating System Fundamentals certification demonstrates and understanding of operating system configurations, installing and upgrading clients, managing applications, files and folders, and devices, operating system maintenance.

The Certificate in Computer Systems Engineering (level 4) also forms the first semester of the Electec College Diploma in Computer Systems & Network Administration (NZQF level 5).

The course material and assessments are underpinned by five NZQF Computer Engineering unit standards from the domain of Electronic Engineering, administered by the ETITO (Electrotechnology Industry Training Organisation).

Electec College is the only private tertiary provider in NZ accredited to deliver these specialist Computer Engineering unit standards.

Computer Assembly and Maintenance

This is an exciting course during which you will spend 100% of your time at your computer learning a comprehensive range of practical skills and supporting theory. You will develop the skills to assemble a computer, install and configure multiple operating systems, repair, maintain and optimise the system for maximum performance, reliability and security.

Electrical Service Technician

You will learn how to install, maintain, test and troubleshoot Ethernet networks, as well as customise network protocols and attach clients to work groups and domains within a LAN environment.  Most importantly, you will learn how to support users on Microsoft Windows platforms and how to troubleshoot any problems and issues a user might experience.

IT Industry Certification

Many companies prefer their IT employees to have industry recognised certifications as a proven level of professionalism and competency. Industry certification will also give you an international passport to mobility between jobs, here and overseas.

When you are proficient in these subjects you will have the option to sit the CompTIA and Microsoft international certification exams for:

How Important is A+ Certification?

A+ certification is a vendor neutral qualification that certifies the competency of service professionals working in IT and  is one of the largest computing certifications in the world. It is developed and sponsored by CompTIA, a global association of ICT industry companies with the common goal of standardising qualifications for professionals working in the industry.

Membership of CompTIA includes most of the global software and hardware manufacturers such as Microsoft, IBM, Lotus, Dell, Compaq, etc. CompTIA state that "CompTIA is a global trade association representing the business interests of the information technology industry."

How Important is Network+ Certification?

Network+ certification is an international, vendor-neutral certification that recognises a computer technician's knowledge of the features and functions of networking components to install, configure and troubleshoot networking hardware, protocols and services.

The demand for skilled network support professionals continues to grow and the Network+ certification is a valuable credential to help start or enhance a networking career. In fact many ICT certifications integrate CompTIA Network+ into their curriculum. Other corporations such as Microsoft, Cisco, Hewlett Packard, Lotus and 3Com also recognise CompTIA Network+ as part of their certification tracks.

See the CompTIA website for more information about the benefits of CompTIA industry certifications, and you can check out your career path options on the Microsoft ICT Curriculum Road Map 2010.

CompTIA Certification Exams

The course assignments and assessments conducted by the College are compulsory to pass the Electec College Certificate in Computer Systems Engineering, but the external certification exams are optional and therefore are not included in the course fee.

The A+ and Network+ exam fees are published on the On-line Certification page of this web site.

A more detailed list of the programme content is published in the Electec College Course Information booklet which we will mail to you as part of the College Information Pack. See the link at the bottom of this page.

Advancement to Higher Learning in Computer Network Administration

The knowledge and skills acquired on this course are recognised by most IT industry sectors and learning institutions as the foundation pathway for advancement to other fields of computing. And in particular the computer network administration subjects delivered in the Electec College Certificate in Computer Network Administration and the second semester of the Diploma in Computer Systems & Network Administration.
