Qualification Overview
This is a 16-week, full-time programme designed to provide technical proficiency and expertise in the implementation and support of computer network systems. This programme also forms the second semester
of the Electec College Diploma in Computer Systems & Network Administration (NZQF level
5). Candidates for this course must have the pre-requisite knowledge and skills provided in the Electec College Certificate in Computer Systems Engineering, or a computer engineering qualification from another
provider, or at least one years industry experience in a computer network support role.
The Certificate in Computer Network Administration (level 6) is based on four NZQF Computer Engineering unit standards from the domain of Electronic Engineering, administered by the ETITO
(Electrotechnology Industry Training Organisation). Electec College is the only private tertiary provider in NZ accredited to deliver these specialist unit standards. It also includes full
training for the Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Certification Paths.
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Certifications
The Microsoft Windows Server 2008 qualifications that we deliver on this programme are:
MCITP Server Administrator is roughly equivalent to the MCSA certification for Windows Server 2003.
These subjects will also prepare you with a substantial foundation of knowledge and skills to undertake extra study in your own time to become a Microsoft Certified IT Professional: Enterprise
Administrator. MCITP Enterprise Administrator is roughly equivalent to the MCSE certification for Windows Server 2003.Full details of these
certifications are provided on the Microsoft Certified IT Professional site.
MCSA certified professionals can make the transition from MCSA Windows Server 2003 to MCITP:Server Administrator and Enterprise Administrator with transition exams. More information on upgrade paths is available on the Microsoft site.
You can also check out your career path options on the Microsoft ICT Curriculum Road Map 2008.

GNU/Linux Subjects
Many organisations use a mix of Windows and Unix or GNU/Linux operating systems. Unix and Linux are widely used in servers (web, ftp, mail etc), and consumer electronic devices (Google Android,
Apple iPhone, TiVo etc). Many computer support positions require some exposure to Unix/Linux in order to support these systems. Electec College has chosen to base the Linux component of the course around specialist ETITO based unit
standards.
These unit standards cover opensource operating systems, the Linux GUI, file and directory systems, printing, backup systems, system processes, memory management, the shell (bash), network system
components, network operating system planning, installation, administration and maintenance.
Students who wish to extend their Linux training are encouraged to study for certification exams such as the Linux Professional Institute LPIC-1, or Red Hat Certified Technician.
Internal Assessments and Certification Exams
The College Certificate in Computer Network Administration is based on a comprehensive range of practical assignments and internal assessments. This work provides a practical application for the
lab-work and network systems theory covered during the programme and incorporates the use of Microsoft Official Courseware and teaching resources specifically prepared by our industry experienced staff.
The course assignments and assessments conducted by the College are compulsory to pass the Electec College Certificate in Computer Network Administration, but the external certification exams are
optional and therefore are not included in the course fee. The MCTS and MCITP exam fees published on the On-line Certification Exams & Fees page are heavily discounted for Electec College students under the Microsoft IT Academy Program.
You have a post-graduate option to study for your Microsoft Certified IT Professional: Enterprise Administrator certification with self-directed study after the completion of this course. We
will provide you with the official courseware at our cost price and the tutorial support at no extra cost. This is a special service provided to our graduates and is not a formal part of the NZQA registered
course.
A more detailed list of the programme content is published in the Electec College Course Information booklet which we will mail to you as part of the College Information Pack. See the link at the bottom of this page.
